An undergrad research project looks really good on your grad school
application...

Research Office Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 12:03:02 -0500 From: Allison Snow

I would like to let you know about two exciting new developments in
the *Undergraduate
Research Office*, located in 150 Page Hall.

1. Our newly updated website is packed with information for undergraduate
students about how to get started on research, how to find a mentor, and how
to find funding, including summer fellowships. See
http://ugresearch.adm.ohio-state.edu/. We also offer regular workshops and
individual advising.

2. We have a new service that allows *professors* to contact and recruit
selected groups of undergraduates to fill a specific research opportunity
(volunteer or otherwise). *Graduate students* and *postdoctoral researchers
* are welcome to use this service in collaboration with a faculty member.
Potential mentors should fill out the short form on our website (see
"Faculty, List Your Projects Here" at the bottom left hand side of our home
web page). We will then notify the targeted students about the research
opportunity, soliciting applications on the researcher's behalf.

We have many talented students who are very eager to get involved in
research, but they often have difficulties finding mentors. Some professors
are simply too over-committed to be able to serve as mentors for
undergraduates, but we are trying to make this process easier. Postdocs and
senior graduate students who supervise undergraduate researchers can gain
assistance and valuable experience by serving as a mentor. Also, it is good
to keep in mind that students can contribute to one's overall research, and
some undergrads have coauthored publications with their mentors.
Supervising a student's first research project can be extremely rewarding
and worthwhile.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Dr. Allison Snow
