CRA-W/CDC Computer Architecture Summer School:
Parallel Programming and Architectures
August 20?21, 2008
Brown University
Providence, RI
http://www.princeton.edu/?archss
*Application due June 1, 2008*
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
We are happy to announce a 2-day workshop sponsored by CRA-W and CDC focused
on computer architecture, with a particular emphasis on the emerging
prevalence of parallel computing. The workshop is targeted in particular for
undergraduate women and under?represented minorities currently enrolled as
juniors or seniors in computer science or computer engineering programs;
however freshman, sophomores, as well as undergrads majoring in other
related fields are also welcome to apply.
This workshop:
? Gives participants a taste of research (with special emphasis on computer
architecture) and helps demystify the world of graduate school.
? Offers presentations on career opportunities in the field of computing as
well as panel discussions on diversity and balancing life and career after
graduation. Presenters at the workshop will include leading researchers from
academia and industry as well as recent graduates of Ph.D. programs in
computer architecture.
? Includes a team solving project focused on parallel computing. The goal of
this project is to give participants a substantial and positive concrete
"research" experience within the confines of this brief workshop.
Participation in the project will not require extensive programming skills;
basic knowledge of fundamental programming principles is sufficient.
Students will be reimbursed for all reasonable travel expenses. There is no
charge for the workshop. Anyone may apply to the workshop, but first
priority will be given to women and under?represented minority applicants.
Applications are due June 1st, 2008.
This workshop is organized by Iris Bahar (Brown University), Russ Joseph
(Northwestern University), Margaret Martonosi (Princeton University), and
Kunle Olukotun (Stanford University).

FWD'd from Deb Ballam...
Hey, everyone. A couple of the local TV stations are planning to cover
Standing Women (this Sunday) and asked which location would be good to
cover. I suggested they go to the First Community Church Hilliard campus.
Everyone is welcome to stand here and you don't need to be a church member
to come.
If you want to stand and you want to have a group to stand with, please join
us. Plan to arrive about 12:45 so we can be ready for the 1 p.m. start.
Directions to the church:
Take Fishinger Road west and cross the bridge at Riverside. At the first
traffic light turn right and the church is on the left about 500 feet after
you turn.
Bring bells to ring. And, plenty of men and boys stood with us last year so
bring all of your loved ones with you!
Here is the original annoucement we sent out about Standing Women if you
want to invite others to join you.
Last May women and girls, along with the men and boys they love, in 75
countries and on all continents of the world stood together in parks, on
beaches, in churches, at graduation ceremonies, in their backyards and at
school yards or anyplace they could find to stand in a global wave of
humanity in support of a better world for our children.
*We will be standing for the world's children and grandchildren, and for the
seven generations beyond them. We dream of a world where all of our
children have safe drinking water, clean air to breathe, and enough food to
eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their
minds and healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they
have a warm, safe and loving place to call home. A world where they don't
live in fear of violence-in their home, in their neighborhood, in their
school or in their world. This is the world of which we dream. This is the
cause for which we stand.***
We will stand again this May 11 at 1 p.m. local time. If 1 p.m. is not
convenient for you, just stand on a different hour with a different time
zone.
Please view our Standing Women website at
*http://www.standingwomen.org*
And view our YouTube video at:
We hope you will stand with us.
And, we hope that you will help us spread the word about Standing Women to
people all over the world.

Have you signed up for an e-mentor?
:-)
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: MentorNet Program program.team@mentornet.net
Below are some aspects of the MentorNet One-on-One Mentoring Programs that
are important to know. Further information may be found in the frequently
asked questions section of our web site:
http://www.mentornet.net/documents/other/help/faqs.aspx
THE TWO E-MENTORING PROGRAMS: In 2007, MentorNet merged the interface for
our Academic and Industry E-mentoring programs. Now the sign-up process is
easier. Proteges choose the type of mentor with whom they wish to be
paired, and mentors descibe their work/educational experience and
preferences for a protege. Participants no longer need to choose "Industry"
or "Academic" programs.
HOW PROTEGES SIGN UP: Signing up to get an e-mentor is an easy process.
FIRST, prospective proteges join/sign in to the MentorNet Community. SECOND,
they follow the One-on-One Mentoring Programs links to create a protege
profile.
MATCHING: Once a protege creates a protege profile, she/he is presented
with the profiles (minus identifying information) of up to 5 potential
mentors. The protege then can choose one of these mentors or ask MentorNet
to make the match automatically for her/him. If after two weeks, the
protege has not chosen or asked MentorNet to choose, we will attempt to
automatically match her/him with a mentor.
The mentor and protege both express preferences on their profiles for the
characteristics of their partner (school attended, educational level, gender
and more). The matching program takes into account each person's
preferences when assessing and making matches.
SUPPORT: As a structured e-mentoring program, we provide program support to
mentors and proteges to help them make the most of their experience. We
have posted a training guide on our web site and have developed web-based
interactive training tutorials that take proteges through some common
mentoring situations.
In addition, after they select their mentor, your proteges will receive
coaching in the form of weekly or biweekly (depending on their educational
level) email discussion suggestions for the entire 8 months of their
official MentorNet relationship. These messages will contain suggestions
that address initiating and sustaining a successful e-mentoring
relationship.
Although the coaching messages provide initiative for the mentoring pairs to
stay in contact, we also encourage participants to contact MentorNet staff
for help with connecting/reconnecting with their partner or assistance with
other difficulties.
We believe the program support MentorNet offers to our One-on-One
E-Mentoring participants will provide the guidance and assistance necessary
to make this program a successful one for both you and your protege
participants.
Enjoy the experience.

FYI, I did this when I was an undergrad and got a lot out of it. I was
paired up with an IBM consultant that was balancing worklife with homelife.
She had a lot of valuable information for me on how to get an internship,
get through interviews, etc. It only took a few hours of my time once a
month because she was even busier than I was. A number of 30-60 min phone
calls and emails back and forth and a learned a lot about our field and the
direction I wanted to head :D.

I debate with my male, gaming friends all the time about the gaming industry
and its bias toward young men. Nintendo has tapped into the market and Sony
and Microsoft are going to start losing out if they don't start changing the
culture around their gaming consoles a little to open them up to the rest of
us that don't only love first person shooters.
Anyone remember that really creepy PS3 commercial with the deformed baby?
That is a perfect example of the culture they are creating around their
console. Most people that weren't a 8-25 year old male (and some that were)
saw that commercial and were appalled, instead of just not finding it
appealing.
But, alas, there is hope:

Good article!
One way to change the game market is to start writing and developing our own
games. Did you know that a team from OSU won second place in the Games 4
Girls contest this year? Check it out:
http://www.cs.uiuc.edu/outreach/games4girls.php
The winning team was Linda Wang, Lauren Sapharas, Liz Leggett and Tiffany
Lee. You can download and play the winning game here

We are having a Jeopardy trivia game tonight (5/21) at 7PM in DL 305.
It will hopefully be exciting with (maybe) a second round between the
winner and a faculty member next week. Anyone interested in helping
out should either volunteer themselves for the competition, find
someone to compete, or email me to help me write questions. I guess
trying to spread the word might also be useful.
There is a pretty good chance of their being food also.

The final round of our Jeopardy will be tomorrow at 7PM in DL 305. It
will be students versus faculty with the two students being our own
Aaron (the current chair of ACM) and Nick Fontaini. The faculty they
will go up against will be Professor Heym. There will also be pizza.
