The Logical Volume Manager is a system in the Linux kernel that allows the abstraction of physical data volumes into so called "logical volumes". For example, with LVM, 3 1TB disks can be combined into a single 3TB linear volume. Alex is going to give a brief overview of how the system works, as well as give a demonstration first hand to show the ins and outs of the system. I hope to see you all there! P.S. As always, there will be pizza :) -- Alek Rollyson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The format of a lightning talk session is very informal. Several presenters will go up one after the other and talk for roughly ten minutes about the topics at hand, so basically it is a tag team effort throughout the whole meeting. The source control talks will tentatively take place on November 5th and the general talks will take place on the last meeting of the quarter, December 3rd. The purpose for this announcement is to request for volunteers for both lightning talk sessions. If you have a source control tool that you would like to discuss with the group or just a general computer/open source/linux topic that you would like to talk about for roughly ten minutes then please send me an email at *rollyson.3@osu.edu*, do not reply to this address as it will not go through. Both meetings will run roughly 1.5 - 2 hours which means that we will have time for about 7-11 talks per meeting with each individual talk lasting approximately 8-12 minutes a piece. This is all subject to adjustment based on the number of volunteers, but based on interest so far we will hopefully have a bulging schedule. If you are interested, please shoot me an email so we can get you scheduled in a spot. Some examples of source control tools are: (these havent been taken, I am just throwing out suggestions for inspiration) - mercurial - git - svk - monotone - darcs - bazaar Some topics already suggested for the general talks: (again...these havent been taken, I am just throwing out suggestions for inspiration) - securing sshd server - nuances of ssh - Latex - GNU screen - overclocking - regular expressions - IRC - intro to VIM Thanks! -- Alek Rollyson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Michael will be demonstrating the basics of building a Python program, beginning with a Hello World in the interpreter and moving over to building Hello World as a stand-a-lone file. Then, he'll cover functions, documentation, and linking files together. Then, Brian will be demonstrating how to use Python to solve problems for class, work, and research, as well as teaching the basic use of some powerful scientific and mathematical tools collected in the SciPy module. As always, there will be pizza :) P.S. - I apologize to everyone for not getting around to doing bot programming last week, the meeting length unfortunately didn't allow for us to stick around and do that. In order to make up for this, anyone who wants to stick around after the meeting this week and work on some TCL scripts for our IRC bot is more than welcome to stay and help out. We will treat this as sort of a "mini-project" that we can work on as a group. Don't worry if you don't know TCL, it will be a good learning experience and the language is not hard to learn at all. Everyone is welcome to stay and contribute. -- Alek Rollyson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you have ever been lost when trying to compile or make menuconfig just confused you so much that you wanted to pull your hair out, then this meeting is for you. A few of our members will be making a collaborative effort on this topic so bring your questions to us and we will do our best to help. We will be going over how to compile a kernel the Debian way, the Gentoo way, and we also will be giving a general overview of the process as a whole so that it can be better understood.
