From swaney.29 at osu.edu Sun Apr 1 03:23:30 2007 From: swaney.29 at osu.edu (BRIAN SWANEY) Date: Sun Apr 1 03:23:35 2007 Subject: [opensource] The Future of Open Source Club & Spring Workshops Message-ID: <491309849121b3.49121b34913098@osu.edu> I'm all for the idea of sticking computers for demos around campus, if we can have people to watch them closely and security devices. Stick a few signs up advertising a free program, give a demo, and invite people to a meeting, with the promise of the given program (VLC is a good start, let them put their media files through it on the demo computer) in all likely forms (Mac, Windows, Solaris, Debian, etc.) and the source code on a CD when they come. Then, once they're there, explain what open source is about and how just getting a wild card media player is merely the beginning. If someone can tell me how to get the VLC packages for different Unix platforms as files (rather than just installing them for myself in the terminal) I should have little difficulty in, and would be glad to write an ISO image. I already have the source code and up-to-date Windows installer. I think I may also have a few spare CDs too... -Brian Swaney ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Anderson Date: Friday, March 30, 2007 5:49 pm Subject: Re: [opensource] The Future of Open Source Club & Spring Workshops > > > > We can promote open source without even requiring a Linux > install. Please join us on Tuesday when Farhad leads us through the process of installing AOL(r) 9.0VR (Windows Vista Ready) in Ubuntu Linux. As we all know, X features include: * Easy-to-use email with automatic scanning for known viruses, worms and Trojans. * Parental Controls to help steer children and teens clear of inappropriate content. * Powerful Spam Controls and Pop-Up Controls to prevent annoying interruptions. It should been an interesting and enlightening time. --alex ====================================== Club meetings are always open to the general public including nonmembers and nonstudents. (If you've haven't done that yourself already, you're a lame noob and should be mocked and ridiculed.) Instead, we will be meeting at the Mirror Lake Amphitheater at 6:00pm to enjoy the weather. Teams must be at least 2/3 engineering/architecture students. Prizes for the top teams at the end of the night! Wednesday, April 11?Games Night in Knowlton 8-11 PM Ever wanted to beat your engineering friends in Texas Hold 'Em, or play in a giant Halo tournament with games being shown on the big screens? To fix it, run: sudo sed -i -e 's/fglrx/ati/g' /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or find the Driver line in that file and replace 'fglrx' with 'ati') Then reboot and it should be back again -- Paul Betts From lingo.13 at osu.edu Sat Apr 7 20:13:32 2007 From: lingo.13 at osu.edu (Alexander J. I would recommend to use one of the libraries which have all that stuff implemented and ready to use. Here is a couple of links: 1. https://sourceforge.net/projects/libhttp/ Never used this this one, but it looks like it is exactly what you need. 2. http://www.trolltech.com/products/qt Qt is just awesome! I used it quite a lot and I love it :) It has much more than just http and networking in general, it has almost anything you can think of. And it is crossplatform. And it is free for non-commercial use. -Karen From barondas at cse.ohio-state.edu Tue Apr 17 09:30:25 2007 From: barondas at cse.ohio-state.edu (Silas Baronda) Date: Tue Apr 17 09:31:20 2007 Subject: [opensource] Meeting Announcement: 4/17/07 - Virtual Operating Systems with Solaris Containers/Zones In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Alexander J. It does HTTP, HTTPS (when combined with openssl), FTP, and a WHOLE bunch of other things. Plus, it has bindings into all sorts of languages (C/C++, Perl, PHP, ...). And, on top of all that, it's what is used by curl (1), likely the best cli download tool (hence the similarity in the names). -- Peace, Nick You can present the material, but you can't make me care. -- Calvin From lingo.13 at osu.edu Tue Apr 17 16:49:07 2007 From: lingo.13 at osu.edu (Alexander J. After I upgrade, I will tell you if I ran into any problems and how > worth this upgrade is. Have a nice day. FYI: So far I've upgraded two of my systems from edgy to feisty. On the first system, everything worked great: no package conflicts, no missing nvidia drivers, easy as pie. Installing packages on the second system also went off without a hitch. Except, of course, for one snafu: I had given up on broken UUIDs and changed /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst manually to point at /dev/hdX device nodes. After the upgrade, the driver for my IDE interface (Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02)) has mysteriously changed and my disks are now /dev/sdX rather than /dev/hdX. Of course, this is partly my fault for being obstinate and refusing to use the device UUIDs. Apart from that, it was a pretty painless upgrade. :) ~Jim. -- James Dinan Dept Computer Science and Engineering The Ohio State University From bettsp at cse.ohio-state.edu Sat Apr 21 10:43:44 2007 From: bettsp at cse.ohio-state.edu (paul c betts) Date: Sat Apr 21 10:43:51 2007 Subject: [opensource] Lab opens at 11 Message-ID: Turns out the lab opens at 11, not 10; sorry about that. I don't know if this is at all similar, but I have a small home network set up, and I have no lag issues at all. I don't use any routers. I have a FreeBSD box (but it could just as easily be Linux) with two 10/100 ethernet ports, one gigabit ethernet port, and one wireless card. One of the 10/100s is hooked up to my outside connection, my main desktop computer (running Gentoo) is hooked up to the gigabit, and we have a laptop which runs off of wireless and sometimes gets hooked up to the other 10/100. I simply bridged all the interfaces together so that everything looks like a single network, just as a router might do. The performance is great. My girlfriend actually works beside me on the FreeBSD computer XDMCP'd into my Gentoo machine, at the same time that I am logged into the Gentoo machine, with no lag at all. This means that the gigabit connection is being used for my internet traffic, while my girlfriend's packets get routed through the connection twice for each request (XDMCP to Gentoo, internet request back to the FreeBSD machine). Again, this all works pretty much without a hitch. So I guess what I'm suggesting is perhaps bypassing the router altogether by setting up your own routing system. It's not that hard to do, and it might solve some of the problems you are having. Even with the inefficient setup I have, I don't have any problems. I'm not sure if they have a motherboard tray or not. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090007+4093&name=%2410+-+%2425 The downside is that they don't all come with PSUs and the shipping prices might be a little high. I like this one quite a bit. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156053 It looks like it is aluminum but it describes it as steel. Might have to buy this one myself :) Thanks, Silas From lingo.13 at osu.edu Mon Apr 30 16:48:03 2007 From: lingo.13 at osu.edu (Alexander J. This allows the other computers in the lab to PXE-boot over the network without a HD, have unified home directories and logins, and in general be really handy. I'll also have a signup sheet at the meeting for those who want a login/password to use the lab on a regular basis to store your stuff and be able to do your labs on computers that you can actually _do_stuff_ on (unlike CL112 *cough*)" --alex ====================================== Club meetings are always open to the general public including nonmembers and nonstudents. Meetings are casual and usually last about one and a half hours. You are welcome to attend as your schedule permits - please be courteous when coming late or leaving early.
