There will be 3 prizes given to the top 3 places ranging from an Apple iPod Nano to a gift certificate. Contestants must register by 11:59Pm on Monday April 23. The site to register is: http://www.topcoder.com/osu Below is an explanation of the competition procedure: The competition will consist of 3 phases: Coding Phase, Challenge Phase and System Test Phase. The coding phase consists of 3 problems, with programming done in Java, C++, C#, or Visual Basic The three coding phase has 3 problems varying from 250 to 1000 points. The most difficult problem, which is the 1000 point problem, involves algorithms like Greedy, Dynamic Programming and sometimes Graph Theory. The middle problem often involves sorting, string parsing or some math. After the Coding Phase, you go to the Challenge Phase where you try to find errors in others' code by giving counter-examples. If you find an error in someone's code, you will get 50 points. But if it's not an error, you will lose 25 points. If someone finds an error in your solution, you will get 0 points for this solution. The last phase is System Test Phase, the system will test your solution again to make sure it's correct. If any of your solution fail system test, you will get 0 point for this solution. After this the points are tallied up and the 3 with the highest scores become first through third place respectively. First place wins a 2GB iPod Nano, second gets a 2GB USB Flash Drive, and third gets a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com.
