Hey Everybody,

Last year Jim started a little naming contest for our lab computer, where we ended up renaming last year's computer 'dl190' as stallman. We now have a new computer this year, and will soon be outfitting our lab with another new desktop, and a laptop for demo'ing.

The naming scheme in use thus far is famous computer scientists, I would like to add contributors to the free software or opensource movement, in addition, any other good names for a computer.

My (personal) list is
Shuttleworth - canonical / ubuntu
Linus Torvalds
Behlendorf - apache

Lessig - creative commons
O'Reilly - tech books

But, there certainly are better names, so feel free to send in your own pick to this list. And we'll be choosing a name once we've settled on one, or three.

and read below for a snip of last years postings on this subject...

Forwarded conversation
Subject: [opensource] Office Computer Name

We've decided on a naming scheme for the club computers: we're going to
name them after famous computer scientists.

Here are some names that were suggested:

Turing
Dijkstra
Phong
Tomasulo
Floyd
Ritchie
Kernigham
Thompson
Licklider or "Lick"

Any other suggestions? We'll be renaming "dl190" next week so make your
opinions known!

Cheers,
Jim.
I belive you mean "Kernighan", ending in an 'n', not an 'm'.
Ahem...
Where's the first programmer, Ada Lovelace? or the inventor of the
compiler, Grace Hopper?

How about the original six Eniac programmers, Kathleen McNulty Mauchly
Antonelli, Jean Jennings Bartik, Frances Snyder Holberton, Marlyn
Wescoff Meltzer, Frances Bilas Spence and Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum?
Lots of good name possibilities there.

For fun, you should also look up Radia Perlman, Jean E Sammet, Sally
Floyd, Barbara Liskov, and Irma Wyman.

And if you're interested in living pioneers, ACM just inducted Susan
Landau (Sun) and Tracy Camp (Colorado School of Mines) into their roster
of distinguished computer engineers.

My personal hero(ine) is Helen Grenier.

In this, I propose a deal: The OSUOSS club will name one of their PCs
Lovelace if you (Bettina) encourage ACM-W members to attend an OSUOSS
meeting. Personally, I think it's a win-win situation, as both of our
organizations are trying to get students excited about computer science,
so the more people we can get, the better! This department has far too
many students who aren't learning about what's cool and new about their
field, especially wrt women in computer science; I think that a lot of
CSE student organizations from the outside seem like "boys clubs" and
I'd like to see that go straight out the window, at least with OSUOSS.
We include _everyone_, regardless of how technical you are or anything
else, we definitely have topics for everyone, and if we don't, anyone
can make their own presentation on what they're interested in!
